The Ceylon Rose (Pachliopta jophon) is one of Sri Lanka's rarest and most endangered butterflies. It is endemic to Sri Lanka and belongs to the Papilionidae family, which includes the swallowtails. This species is highly sought after by butterfly enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and limited distribution.

Characteristics:

  • Medium to large-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 90–110 mm.
  • The forewings are black with fine white markings, giving them a velvety look.
  • The hindwings have a striking red and black pattern, characteristic of the Pachliopta genus.
  • The body is black with red spots, which serves as a warning coloration to predators.
  • Slow and graceful flight, often gliding between flower clusters.
  • Habitat & Distribution:

  • Endemic to Sri Lanka, found mainly in the wet-zone forests of the central and southwestern regions.
  • Prefers rainforests, lowland forests, and shaded areas near host plants.
  • Extremely rare in the wild, primarily due to habitat destruction and illegal collection.
  • Behavior & Ecology:

  • Feeds on nectar from flowering plants, especially from Lantana, Ixora, and other wildflowers.
  • Toxic to predators due to its diet, which includes host plants from the Aristolochiaceae (Dutchman's Pipe) family.
  • The caterpillars feed exclusively on Aristolochia species, absorbing toxins that make them unpalatable to birds and other predators.
  • Usually seen flying solo or in pairs, unlike some other swallowtails that gather in groups.
  • Conservation Status:

  • Critically endangered due to habitat loss, deforestation, and illegal butterfly trade.
  • Protected under Sri Lankan wildlife laws, making collection and trade illegal.
  • Conservation efforts focus on habitat restoration and increasing awareness about its importance.
  • The Ceylon Rose is a true jewel of Sri Lanka's butterfly diversity, symbolizing the need for conservation of the island’s rich biodiversity.
