Bandarawela ෴ බණ්ඩාරවෙල

Location: Bandarawela is located 197km away from Colombo of Western province, in the Uva province of Sri Lanka.

Reaching Bandrarawela: Bandarawela can be reached by main motor roads running from Colombo to Central Highlands as well as by Highland railway line from Colombo to Badulla

Setting: Bandarawela is set amidst hill over hill of tea plantations interspersed by fruit gardens and vegetable plots all over the region.

Badarawela Town: Bandarawela Town is a bustling market town where the Sunday fair attracts the throngs of farmers and consumers from surrounding areas.

Transportation hub: Just north of the railway station is the main bus station where the roads run to all surrounding towns: Welimada to the north; Haputale to the south; Wellawaya to the east.Bandarawela bus station make it convenient for transportation to a multitude of tourist attractions: Haputale, Ella, Ratnapura, Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Arugam Bay and Matara.

Accommodation at Bandarawela: Bandarawela has plenty of small hotels and guest houses. The most famous hotel therein is Bandarawela Hotel, a renovated colonial bungalow set up on an elevated ground in the city center.

Excursions from Bandarawela

Dowa Rock Cave: 6km east of Bandarawela, close to a stream by the road, is the compact Dowa Rock Cave temple. It is home to lovely Buddhist murals and beautiful standing Buddha statue, 4 meters in height, cut into the rock. Though smaller in size and lesser in grandeur, the Dowa Rock Cave temple, with its murals and sculpture, is similar in some aspects to the renowned Golden Dambulla Rock Temple.

About Badulla District

Badulla is the capital of Uva Province in Sri Lanka. Badulla is located on the southeast of Kandy, almost encircled by the Badulu Oya River, about 680 meters (2200 ft) above sea level and is surrounded by tea plantations. The town is overshadowed by the Namunukula range of mountains. Badulla is about 230km away from Colombo towards the eastern slopes of central hills of Sri Lanka.

Badulla and surroundings are highly recommended for eco-tourists as Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles mountains are few hours away.

About Uva Province

The Uva Province is Sri Lanka's second least populated province, with 1,187,335 people, created in 1896. It consists of two districts called Badulla and Monaragala The provincial capital is Badulla. Uva is bordered by Eastern, Southern and Central provinces. Its major tourist attractions are Dunhinda Falls, Diyaluma Falls, Rawana Falls, the Yala National Park (lying partly in the Southern and Eastern Provinces) and Gal Oya National Park (lying partly in the Eastern Province). The Gal Oya hills and the Central Mountains are the main uplands, while the Mahaweli and Menik rivers and the huge Senanayake Samudraya and Maduru Oya Reservoirs are the major waterways in Uva province.
